The Adjustment Bureau

Hollywood Humanism & Free Will

It always strikes me as odd when Hollywood does Theology. The latest entry is The Adjustment Bureau, which tries to tackle one of the really big questions: does free will exist?

The movie comes up with an answer that is uncomfortable at best; that free will does exist, but only within strict boundaries. And to come to that conclusion it takes a completely inadequate and grossly unfair distortion of God and history.

Now, I’m not here to have a big rant about the movie industry. But I did want to point out how interesting it is that a secular film company (interested primarily in profit) would spend millions of dollars to make a film where the primary plot hinge is free will. While it makes a good plot, it is still Theology, or at least Philosophy. And of course, they run into the brick wall of God in the process.

No Free Will Without God

Unless the God of the Bible exists, there is zero basis for believing in free will. In a Cosmos where there is only matter and time (that’s what evolution tells you) there is no room for anything that isn’t  purely physical process. Evolution tells us that everything is just “stuff happening;” a giant chemical reaction. Without a creator to make them there is no room in a naturalistic Cosmos for things like:

  • logic
  • morals
  • love
  • freedom
  • dignity

…and yes, free will. As a matter of fact, without God the whole idea of even having an IDEA is completely absurd. If everything going on in your head is just neurons firing in response to stimuli, there is no such thing as a relevant thought, much less a logical one. We’ll have to deal more with the insanity of atheism later. It’s just ironic that even atheists invoke God when they need to – if only to support a plot mechanism.

There is a creator. A God who is there. What’s more – He has a message for you:

“. . . whosoever will, let him take of the water of life freely.” Revelation 22:17b
